I took a 3 day plein air class from Krystal Brown in Sedona.  She is unusually skilled in teaching students to physically position the paintbrush and canvas so as to orient the subject matter to gain a true painting of the subject matter.  I used to put the canvas lower and/or to my side so I could stand at an angle from what I was painting.

She convinced me to put the easel and canvas in front of me, lowering the canvas so I was to paint with exact proportions of the subject matter that would fit the size of the canvas.  In essence, She ensured we “captured” the subject matter by aligning our canvas viewpoint with the focus of intention to paint what we see … hard to explain but I’ve painted for many years and never approached the painting with first setting up the canvas directly beneath the view so as to mimic taking a photograph with my eyes.  

Her use of dark undertones and the knack for painting first the shadows is priceless.   

She was always on the sight and was painstakingly available to us in each step of her approach- she has an uncanny translatable energy and passion to help students learn and instantly get improved results.  

She is skilled at conveying a technique which is useful to all artists.   She also is thoughtful in taking time with each student to translate what can be seen vs what is being painted, “paint what you see.”  

A gem of a teacher.  A professional.  A true artist.
